A newborn portrait of Joel taken in East Greenwich, RI.

Capturing the first moments of your child’s life will become the most important keepsake for years to come. Those tiny toes and fingers, the sleepy eyes and sweet expressions will fill your heart with endless joy.

Newborns require more attention, longer sessions and gentle coaxing to produce those timeless photographs each parent is searching for. Expectations are different for this portraiture group than the others from both parents and photographer alike. Below are session tips and expectations to ensure a smooth and welcoming environment for your newest member of the family.

what to expect from your session ~

As a photographer and a mom, I understand first hand how protective parents feel about their newborn baby. It is my goal to relax not only the child, but also the parents. The more relaxed the atmosphere, the better the photographs will be.

After signing the initial contract and deposit, I will schedule a phone consult a few weeks before the child’s due date. The consult will include details about location, expectations from parents and approximate date the session will occur. Newborn pictures are best captured during the first two weeks of life, as the baby has not fully “awakened” from birth.

On the day of shooting, I will spend some time bonding with both child and parents. The more comfortable the environment the better, so I do recommend on location in the home shooting of a newborn. Familiar smells and sounds will always be the best to soothe your little one.

what to remember when scheduling your session ~

A well fed and rested baby is ideal for a smooth session. I encourage “topping” the baby off just before starting the shoot. New parents are most nervous about the feeding and sleeping schedules of their newborn. Keep in mind when the child feeds, how long it will take and whether or not he/she will still be awake after a feeding. The best way to schedule the session is for me to arrive at feeding time, feed while I am setting up and then I will begin photographing post feeding. Remember that a full tummy always produces a happy and relaxed baby.

I am currently available primarily on the weekends, but can do some late afternoons and evenings with notice. Generally sessions run 1-2 hours with ample time to rest and relax. I am determined to take as much time as reasonably needed to create the beautiful result the client is looking for. Currently, I am booking 2-3 weeks in advance. A 50% non-refundable deposit is due at the time of booking to secure date and time of session. The remainder is due the day of your session.  The non-refundable deposit fee can be applied toward a rescheduled session if cancellation is necessary due to illness, poor weather conditions or another urgent matter. I do understand the temperament of the client could interfere with creating beautiful images, so if your child is overly cranky or simply not cooperating before the shoot, we can reschedule. I also reserve the right to reschedule the session due to circumstances that will interfere with creating the timeless portrait we have discussed. Please allow at least 72 hours notice for canceling when possible.

what to wear ~

Newborns are easy, the less clothing the better. Come prepared with a few favorite outfits and props. More often than not, the most treasured shots are naked or in a diaper. As for parents, keep it simple and solid. Breast feeding moms will find it easier to wear an easy access shirt that is comfortable and photographs well. Matching exactly is not ideal, simple black or white or colors in similar families are best.

location, location, location ~

Home is best for a babies first time in front of the camera. The more comfortable and familiar the environment, the better. As the photographer, I can manipulate your surroundings to produce the best image. A clean and organized house is the best, but do not go crazy for me! I can make it work!

I do have some props, but I find the less complicated the background the better. Solid walls, comforters, blankets and such allow for a perfect backdrop to your new an exciting little package. Skin on skin moments with Daddy, Mom’s loving looks, and intermingled hands or feet in a natural setting produce lasting memories.
